Mantra {Chanting} for Compassion

As we move into a season devoted to love, we’ll deepen our capacity for selfless love with
108 rounds of an ancient mantra for compassion: Oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ.

Roughly translated, mani means “jewel”, padme means “lotus,” and hum evokes the spirit of enlightenment. But the “jewel in the lotus” is less about what it means, and more about what it does.

A mantra is like a bridge helping us cross over from our limited state of consciousness to a higher state of consciousness. Because everything is energy vibrating, these sacred sounds are intended to align our vibration with universal energies. They regulate our breathing, our nervous system and help is reach deeper states of meditation. Ultimately, we use “Oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ” to embody the energy of compassion as we journey toward moksha (freedom, enlightenment). Together we’ll explore all this by:

– Learning the mythology and symbolism of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, the personification of compassion.
– Raising our vibration by chanting 108 mantras to deepen karuna, or compassion toward all beings.
– Experiencing meditation toward liberation.
